The Bayshore Bikeway is a 24-mile bicycle facility around San Diego Bay. Currently, approximately 13 miles of bicycle paths are in use on the Bikeway. The rest of the facility consists of on-street sections designated as either bicycle lanes or bicycle routes.

SANDAG recently updated the Bayshore Bikeway Plan, identifying opportunities to improve the bikeway along the east side of the Bay. The plan is available as a download below in PDF format.
The most recent improvement to the bikeway is the construction of a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge at the Sweetwater River. The bridge, named for long-time bicycle advocate and supporter of the Bayshore Bikeway, Gordy Shields, and its connecting bike path were constructed by Caltrans at a cost of $5.2 million.
Currently, the City of San Diego is developing a new section of bike path between Imperial Beach and Chula Vista that will replace the current routing along Palm Avenue in South Bay. Construction should begin in September 2007.
