Regional activities educate commuters SANDAG
during Rideshare Week 2009

As part of the region’s annual Rideshare Week activities, iCommute hosted a rideshare fair and employer forum on October 7, helping educate San Diego commuters on ridesharing. The employer forum, which was hosted by SAIC, featured a panel of managers and human resources professionals who oversee some of the most successful commuter programs in the San Diego region. They spoke to an audience of approximately 30 business representatives on the benefits of commuter programs, tips on how to get started, best practices, and more.

San Diego City Councilmember Sherri Lightner presented the opening remarks, and the discussion included comments from panelists Debra Gutzmer, SAIC; Dave Beadle, QUALCOMM; Rita Reddy, Port of San Diego; Victor Garcia, Mailboxes Etc.-UPS Corporate; and Beatrice Kalin, MedImpact Healthcare Systems, Inc.

The Rideshare fair, which took place on SAIC’s campus, highlighted all the different ways to rideshare. It also educated commuters on methods of getting to work other than driving alone, including iCommute’s new RideMatcher and TripTracker tools. Fair attendees also had the opportunity to test ride electric bicycles, find out about iCommute’s programs, talk with transit representatives from MTS and NCTD, and learn about vanpooling from SANDAG’s vanpool vendors.

Rideshare Week is a nationally recognized event promoting alternative commute choices to driving alone such as carpooling, vanpooling, taking public transportation, walking, teleworking, or bicycling to work. Rideshare Week 2009 was sponsored by Barona Resort & Casino, VPSI, Inc., Green Cruiser Electric Bicycles, Women's Bureau, SAIC, Enterprise Rideshare, and Cloud 9 SuperShuttle.
