Comprehensive Borders Projects
Virginia Avenue Intermodal Center Concept
Because of the opening of El Chaparral on November 1, 2012, and the closure of the southbound pedestrian crossing at Camiones Way, there is concern that only one pedestrian crossing at San Ysidro will result in significant pedestrian delays, increased automobile congestion, and a decline in transit access and mobility to the Port of Entry.
As a result, the need for the Virginia Avenue Intermodal Transportation Center has been reprioritized and is currently under evaluation as part of Phase 1 of the U.S. General Services Administration's San Ysidro Port of Entry Expansion Project.
SANDAG, in collaboration with Caltrans, the City of San Diego, and MTS, has developed several concepts for how a permanent Virginia Avenue Intermodal Transportation Center could function and what uses should be accommodated at the site.
For more information on the project, please see the November 16, 2012, Borders Committee agenda.
