Data Systems Intern

Overview of GIS and Regional Models functions

The Technical Services Department is responsible for gathering, analyzing, producing, delivering, and maintaining information in support of regional planning, funding, and policymaking efforts. The Regional Models team is responsible for creating long-range forecasts that provide estimates of population, housing, and demographic and economic characteristics and the GIS team conducts spatial analyses and creates visual representations of data through maps. The interns will gain exposure to the industry-leading work SANDAG is doing in these fields.

Intern Responsibilities

With the guidance and mentoring of senior staff, these positions will provide a “hands-on” learning experience in the use of data compilation visualization, dissemination, and analysis methods. Examples of intern responsibilities may include:

  • Contribute to the research, collection, and compilation of project and program data; ensure the accuracy of information; maintain databases and documentation.
  • Assist with data analysis, including statistical calculations; participate in estimating/forecasting potential trends.
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports, summaries, correspondence, and presentations.
  • Assist with the creation of maps and conduct GIS spatial analyses; assist with conducting field surveys with GPS devices.
  • Assist with spatially enabling tabular, hard copy mapping, or other source information through geocoding, geo-referencing, digitizing, or other methods.
  • Assist in acquiring, transforming, and integrating socioeconomic data used for land use and transportation models.
  • Assist with developing SQL queries, stored procedures, and other database related tasks.


SANDAG staff are known for their commitment to excellence and passion for the work they do. We look for the same qualities in interns. To be most successful in these positions, our ideal candidates will have the following education, experience, and attributes:

  • Graduate level coursework in geography, computer science, economics, planning, or a related field.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated use of ESRI ArcGIS software; experience with MS Access and SQL Server databases is desirable.
  • Ability to creatively use technology to solve data processing and business process problems.
  • Ability to complete assignments that involve researching, analyzing, and synthesizing information into written summaries, reports, or recommendations.
  • Advanced computer skills with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Internet research; experience with programming, especially Python or Java, is desirable.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask and work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks typical of an entry-level research position.

Hours, Pay, and Perks

Interns are paid $13.50 per hour, and are eligible to receive pro-rated holiday pay, paid sick leave, and a regional transit pass. These internships are offered as one-year positions, working approximately 20 to 25 hours per week. The work is primarily performed during normal business hours; a specific schedule will be worked out between the intern and manager.
