Local events & prizes announced for Dump the Pump Day

With the return of high gas prices, the North County Transit District (NCTD), the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), and SANDAG announced today that they will join with other public transportation groups nationwide to participate in the sixth annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 16.

If cutting expenses, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing our nation’s dependence on foreign oil are not enough motivation for solo drivers to consider new alternatives, Dump the Pump Day here in San Diego County also comes with freebies and a chance to win some prizes. The three agencies are planning Dump the Pump Day activities to celebrate transit passengers and encourage more to try an alternative commute.

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2011 National Dump the Pump Day encourages people to ride public transportation and save money instead of driving a car. This annual message is particularly pertinent in 2011, when gas prices have skyrocketed, and the San Diego area has some of the highest in the nation.

Here is a rundown of Dump the Pump Day activities:

From the SANDAG iCommute program: Pledge to Dump the Pump and log your alternative commute trip, June 13 to 30, 2011, to be entered into a drawing for a $50 VONS grocery card. An alternate commute includes taking public transit, carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, or teleworking. For more information, visit

From MTS: Head over to the Old Town Transit Center on Thursday, June 16 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for the opportunity to earn gift cards by singing along to the “MTS Moves Me Like That” jingle in front of the video camera as part of your pledge to Dump the Pump. To learn more visit

From NCTD: This month, transit riders are invited to Dump the Pump and Snap Yourself. Take a picture of your face on BREEZE, SPRINTER or COASTER, submit it, and you could win an iPod Touch or Nook e-reader. Find details at Visit NCTD staff at the Oceanside Sunset Market on June 16, where you can get free transit passes if you “Sign the Pledge to Save.”

For more Dump the Pump fun and specials, drop by the Old Town Transit Center June 16, 8 a.m. to10 a.m., to join iCommute, MTS and NCTD, and the Walrus 105.7 FM, to celebrate with hundreds of commuters who “Dumped the Pump” that morning and took public transit.
