Rideshare Commuter Challenge kicks off

Starting this week and throughout the month of October, solo drivers in the San Diego region have lots of incentives to try commute alternatives, such as carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, using public transit, or telecommuting. With Rideshare Week underway October 3-7, the SANDAG iCommute program is kicking off its month-long Rideshare 2011 Commuter Challenge.

Challenge participants will not only save gas and beat traffic, they will be eligible to win prizes. Prize drawings will be held daily during Rideshare Week and every Friday throughout October. Prizes include two electric bikes, gift certificates to Suki Day Spa, monthly transit passes, and entertainment gift cards.

To participate, go to www.511sd.com/iCommute to submit a simple form pledging to make a difference, sign up for a free iCommute account, and log your alternative trips. You are then automatically entered to win prizes. iCommute account users have access to free, secure services to find carpools, vanpools, walking or biking partners, and the Guaranteed Ride Home program. SANDAG provides a subsidy of up to $400 per month to qualified vanpools that lease vehicles from vendors under contract with the iCommute program.

Also, SANDAG is sponsoring the Rideshare Corporate Challenge. Thirty-eight companies and agencies from around the region, representing more than 78,000 employees, are competing to see which will have the highest average number of employees using alternative commutes. Winners will be announced in November.

Sponsors of Rideshare 2011 include Suki Day Spa, San Diego Business Journal, San Diego Union-Tribune, VPSI Inc., and Magic 92.5.
