Six local employers win green commute challenge

iCommute

Six employers in the San Diego region have won the Rideshare 2011 Corporate Challenge sponsored by SANDAG to encourage solo drivers to try a more sustainable commute, such as biking, walking, taking public transit, teleworking, vanpooling, and carpooling.

The winners for the respective size categories are as follows:

San Diego Coastkeeper - Best Micro Company (1–25 employees)
Parsons Brinckerhoff - Best Small Company (26–150 employees)
URS Corporation - Best Medium Company (151–750 employees)
Caltrans, District 11 - Best Large Company (751–1,500 employees)
Scripps Research Institute - Best Macro Company (1,501–5,000 employees)
Sharp HealthCare - Best Mega Company (5,001+ employees)

The SANDAG iCommute program sponsored the Corporate Challenge as part of national Rideshare Week 2011. Thirty-eight local employers, representing more than 78,000 workers, participated in the challenge. Altogether, they logged 16,918 alternative commute trips in the iCommute online TripTracker tool.

“The employees at the winning companies are to be commended for setting an example for the rest of the region,” SANDAG Executive Director Gary Gallegos said. “They helped reduce this region’s congestion and cut greenhouse gas emissions by getting out of their cars and trying alternative ways to get to and from work.”

In October, while the Corporate Challenge was underway, SANDAG also sponsored a Commuter Challenge aimed at the general public, inspiring nearly 1,700 people to take an online pledge to try a more sustainable commute. These participants tracked their alternative commutes online and were automatically entered into weekly prize drawings. The SANDAG commuter Web site, www.iCommuteSD.com, calculates the environmental and monetary savings commuters accumulate by using alternatives to solo driving. Fifty prizes were awarded to participants. Two grand prize winners each received an electric bike.

The Rideshare 2011 Corporate and Commuter Challenges generated significant environmental benefits. Nearly 66,000 alternative commute trips were taken, resulting in 1.5 million vehicle miles not traveled. That translated into 67,066 gallons of gasoline saved; 1.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions reduced; and $910,657 in fuel and vehicle maintenance costs saved.

Sponsors of Rideshare 2011 include Suki Day Spa, San Diego Business Journal, The San Diego Union-Tribune, VPSI Inc., and Magic 92.5, among others.
