Reduced South Bay Expressway tolls take effect June 30

SANDAG will reduce tolls on the South Bay Expressway at 12:01 a.m. Saturday morning, making the convenient connection between eastern Chula Vista and the rest of the region easier to access and helping to bring congestion relief to South County decades sooner than previously planned.

In celebration, SANDAG will host a free community event on Saturday at the Otay Ranch Town Center, 2015 Birch Road, in Chula Vista from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will feature a wide range of family-friendly festivities, including live music, a classic car show, kids’ arts and crafts activities, a 50-foot truck outfitted with video game consoles, prize drawings, and an ice luge sculpture with Naked Juice samples.

Effective June 30, tolls will decrease by as much as 40 percent on South Bay Expressway. Prices will range from 50 cents to $2.75 for customers with a FasTrak electronic tolling account and from $2 to $3.50 for cash and credit card users. The toll for local trips within the City of Chula Vista will be set at just 50 cents for FasTrak users.

South Bay Expressway stretches for about 10 miles through eastern Chula Vista from State Route 905 near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry to State Route 54 near the Sweetwater Reservoir. To learn more about the Expressway, visit SBXthe125.com.

On the day of the event, tolls for using the Expressway will be waived between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. so event attendees can travel to and from the celebration for free.
