Commuter challenge starts Oct. 1

Throughout October, solo drivers in the San Diego region have lots of incentives to try alternative commutes, such as carpooling, biking, vanpooling, walking, using public transit, telecommuting, or working a compressed workweek. The SANDAG iCommute program is kicking off its month-long Rideshare 2012 Commuter Challenge, starting with Rideshare Week, a national event held in October to promote sustainable travel choices.

To participate in the challenge, commuters simply pledge to try an alternative commute at and log their trips online in TripTracker to be automatically entered to win prizes, including two Electra Verse bicycles, gift certificates to Suki Day Spa, monthly transit passes, car2go memberships with driving minutes, airport shuttle service, and more. Prize drawings will be held daily during National Rideshare Week, Oct. 1-5, and weekly through the rest of October.

The SANDAG iCommute program provides free, secure matching services to find carpools, vanpools, and walking or biking partners, as well as the Guaranteed Ride Home program. iCommute also offers a subsidy of up to $400 per month to qualified vanpools.

In conjunction with the commuter challenge, local employers are participating in the third annual iCommute Rideshare 2012 Corporate Challenge sponsored by Tri-City Wellness Center and Enterprise Rideshare. A record number of companies and agencies around the region, representing more than 87,000 employees, will compete to see which will have the highest percentage of employees logging alternative commutes. Winners will be announced in November.

Rideshare 2012 sponsors include Suki Day Spa, SuperShuttle, Electra Bicycle Company, U-T San Diego, Enlace, San Diego Business Journal, Metropolitan Transit System, North County Transit District, and Caltrans.
