Rideshare Corporate Challenge winners

By encouraging their employees to adopt sustainable commute choices, such as carpooling, biking, walking, and using public transit, six employers in the San Diego region have won the Rideshare 2012 Corporate Challenge sponsored by the SANDAG iCommute program, SANDAG announced November 20. A record number of forty-eight companies and organizations, representing 87,000 employees, competed in the third annual Corporate Challenge.

Throughout the month-long event in October, participants logged more than 42,000 alternative commute trips online in the iCommute TripTracker tool. The Rideshare Corporate Challenge successfully built on the nationally recognized Rideshare Week held each year in the first week of October.

The winners for the respective size categories are as follows:

MaXentric Technologies, LLC, Micro Company (1 - 25 employees)
Parsons Brinckerhoff, Small Company (26 - 100 employees)
RECON Environmental, Inc., Medium Company (101 - 500 employees) Port of San Diego, Large Company (501 - 2,000 employees)
The Scripps Research Institute, Macro Company (2,001 - 5,000 employees)
UC San Diego, Mega Company (5,001 + employees)

This year’s Corporate Challenge theme, “getting to work doesn’t have to be hard work,” was enthusiastically embraced by commuters who tried carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, taking public transit, teleworking, or working a compressed (9/80 or 4/10) workweek.

“We applaud the winners for rising to the challenge,” SANDAG Executive Director Gary Gallegos said. “They are not just helping to reduce traffic congestion, they also are supporting a healthy lifestyle. Walking or biking to work or to transit is a great way to get exercise.”

Winning companies receive a commemorative plaque, recognition in a print ad in a regional newspaper, and on the award-winning iCommute website. iCommute is the San Diego regional transportation assistance program managed by SANDAG.

In October, while the Corporate Challenge was underway, SANDAG also sponsored a Commuter Challenge aimed at the general public, inspiring 2,700 people to take an online pledge to try a sustainable commute. These participants tracked their alternative trips online and were able to monitor their environmental and monetary savings. By logging their trips, they were automatically entered into weekly prize drawings. Overall, iCommute partners gave out nearly 300 prizes, including bikes from Electra Bicycle Company.

The Rideshare 2012 Corporate and Commuter Challenges helped achieve significant environmental benefits. A total of 300,000 alternative trips were logged. That translated into 11.7 million vehicle miles not traveled; 508,290 gallons of gasoline saved; 10.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions avoided; and $2.2 million in fuel and vehicle maintenance costs saved.

Partners of Rideshare 2012 included Suki Day Spa, SuperShuttle, U-T San Diego, Enlace, San Diego Business Journal, Metropolitan Transit System, North County Transit District, Caltrans, Electra Bicycle Company, and vRide.
