Rideshare Challenge winners announced

The SANDAG iCommute program honored six employers in San Diego County for encouraging employees to choose healthy, sustainable commute options during Rideshare Month this October.

Overall, 69 employers, with more than 178,000 employees, participated in this year’s Rideshare Challenge, choosing to commute by carpool, vanpool, transit, biking, or walking. They logged their trips online in the iCommute TripTracker tool to determine the winners.

The top employers of the Rideshare 2015 Challenge in each of the respective size categories are:

Micro Employer (1 to 25 employees): Mixte Communications
Small Employer (26 to 100 employees): ICF International – San Diego
Medium Employer (101 to 500 employees): Johnson Matthey
Large Employer (501 to 2,000 employees): Watkins Manufacturing
Macro Employer (2,001 to 5,000 employees): San Diego Zoo Global
Mega Employer (5,001+ employees): Sharp HealthCare

In addition to the Rideshare Challenge, all San Diego County commuters were encouraged to choose sustainable commuting options throughout October and log their trips online for chances to win prizes. Participants helped achieve significant environmental benefits:

- More than 96,370 gallons of gasoline saved, enough to fill nearly 2,294 barrels of oil!

- More than $290,075 saved on fuel costs, the equivalent to 528 nights at the Hotel del Coronado.

- 1,791,744 calories burned biking or walking to work, the same amount contained in 2,297 California burritos.

- 2,769,081 pounds of CO2 emissions prevented, equivalent to the weight of 10,069 giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo.

The Rideshare 2015 Challenge was supported by Annual iCommute Partners: Bicycle Warehouse, Caltrans, car2go, Clif Bar, DecoBike,, Metropolitan Transit System, North County Transit District, San Diego Zoo, Uber, and Zipcar. Event partners included the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and vRide.
