Construction completed on I-805 East Plaza Blvd auxiliary lane project

A new northbound auxiliary lane and southbound outside through lane opened to traffic on January 15, 2016, along I-805 in National City. The addition of these lanes are expected to improve overall freeway flow and help to alleviate congestion along I-805 in South San Diego County.

The approximately half-mile-long new lanes extend the merging distance between on- and off-ramps in order to accommodate the maneuvering of traffic entering and exiting the freeway. By minimizing maneuvering in the general purpose lanes, the lanes will help to improve overall freeway flow and reduce congestion along I-805 in the area.

The opening of the lanes, which extend from SR 54 to East Plaza Boulevard along I-805, signifies completion of construction on the East Plaza Boulevard Auxiliary Lane Project. In addition to constructing the lanes, the project also implemented several improvements along this stretch of I-805. These improvements include the reconstruction of the southbound freeway on-ramp at East Plaza Boulevard and the installation of a southbound on-ramp meter. Landscaping of the project area will follow the completion of construction.

The East Plaza Boulevard Auxiliary Lane Project is part of the first phase of the I-805 South Express Lanes Project, a $1.1 billion effort to create a modern new transportation backbone for South County. Funding for the project is provided by TransNet, the regional half cent sales tax for transportation administered by SANDAG. Weather permitting, the first phase of the project will be completed in early 2016.
