Internal Audit Program Intern

Salary Range:

Overview of the Office of the Independent Performance Auditor

The Office of the Independent Performance Auditor reviews SANDAG programs, functions, operations, management systems, and procedures to assess whether the agency is achieving economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the full use of resources.

Intern Responsibilities

With guidance and mentoring from senior staff, these positions will provide a “hands-on” learning experience in the work of the internal audit office. Examples of intern responsibilities include:

  • Assist with a variety of administrative, operational, financial, performance, and management studies and audits of agency activities, functions, services, and programs.
  • Assist with conducting organization-wide risk assessments.
  • Participate in meetings with employees to conduct audit entrance and exit meetings
  • Participate in interviews of officials, representatives, and experts in the field of study.
  • Assist with information-gathering and data analysis.
  • Assist in review of laws, policies, best practices, regulations, contracts, and previous audit reports.
  • Assist with preparing reports and general correspondence.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay current with new trends in the field of internal auditing.

  • Graduate or undergraduate level coursework in business, public administration, finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of financial, statistical, comparative tools, and software used for statistical analysis and data management.
  • Some familiarity with the standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing and the Government Auditing Standards.
  • Ability to complete assignments that involve researching, analyzing, and synthesizing information into written summaries, reports, or recommendations.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask and work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate with various audiences using exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Willingness to perform a variety of tasks typical of an entry-level auditor position.

Hours, Pay, and Perks

Undergraduate-level interns will be paid $15 per hour; interns with a bachelor’s degree or higher will be paid $18 per hour. Interns also receive pro-rated holiday pay, paid sick leave, and a regional transit pass. These internships are offered as one-year positions, working approximately 20 hours per week. The work is primarily performed during normal business hours; a specific schedule will be determined between the interns and supervisor.
