Tuesday Overnight I-5 Closures in University City for Gilman Drive Bridge Construction

Concrete Pours to Build Bridge Deck

July 9, 2018-- Starting tomorrow, July 10, at 9 p.m. through Wednesday, July 11, at 5 a.m. all southbound lanes and several northbound lanes of Interstate 5 will be closed as crews pour the concrete to create the deck of the new Gilman Drive Bridge.

Heavy equipment and machinery, including an industrial-sized pump, will be moved onto the freeway during the closures. The pump’s boom will hang over the lanes as crews guide the concrete onto the bridge top during the deck pour.

Southbound I-5 will be fully closed from the Interstate 5/Interstate 805 split to La Jolla Village Drive in University City:
• Tuesday, July 10, from 9 p.m. to Wednesday, July 11, at 5 a.m.
• Southbound motorists will be detoured via I-805.

Northbound I-5 will be partially closed, from Nobel Drive to Voigt Drive:
• Tuesday, July 10, from 9 p.m. to Wednesday, July 11, at 5 a.m.

Traffic controls and detour signs have been placed to alert motorists in advance. Nearby residents may hear back-up alarms, drilling, and concrete pumping noises.

Work on the Gilman Drive Bridge began in late 2016 on I-5 near Gilman Drive. Crews have installed temporary barricades near Gilman Drive that will remain in place until the project is complete. The new bridge will connect the east and west campus of UC San Diego between Gilman Drive and Medical Center Drive, while spanning over Interstate 5. The bridge is expected to open early next year.
