SANDAG teams with UC San Diego for Mid-Coast Trolley Mobility Hub Designathon

April 10, 2019 - SANDAG collaborated with UC San Diego to host the Pepper Canyon Mobility Hub Designathon on April 6-7. More than 200 students, professionals, and community members participated in the two-day event. SANDAG Chair and Mayor of Poway Steve Vaus was in attendance, as well as San Diego Council President Pro Tem Barbara Bry.

Mobility hubs are places that combine services, amenities, and supporting technology to enhance the travel experience such as bike/scooter share services and parking areas, package delivery services, and real-time travel information. The SANDAG Mid-Coast Mobility Hub Strategy team is preparing conceptual plans for incorporating mobility hub features at each of the nine new Trolley stations that are being constructed as part of the Mid-Coast Trolley project.

At the recent two-day event, students and interested members of the public developed innovative designs for a mobility hub at the Pepper Canyon Trolley station, which will be located on the UC San Diego campus.  Common themes among designs involved methods for improving campus navigation and student life. SANDAG planning experts, engineers, and other professionals – including Chief Deputy Executive Director Kim Kawada – mentored participants in their design process.

On Sunday evening, Chair Vaus offered encouraging words to participants, reminding them that their designs could one day be part of San Diego’s history.

Once all final designs were showcased, a panel of judges selected the winning teams across five categories. Each team was gifted $1000 in prize money. The winners for each category included:

STORYTELLING: Thotty for Scotty
PROTOTYPING: Crow's Nest Engineering
READY TO LAUNCH: Salt & Pepper

Over the next few weeks, the UC San Diego Design Lab will work on creating one cohesive design concept that incorporates participants’ submissions.
