Mid-Coast Trolley Crews Complete I-5 Closures Ahead of Schedule

Trolley Falsework now Spans over I-5 Lanes South of Nobel Drive

June 25, 2019-- Temporary overnight closures of Interstate 5 (I-5) lanes finished ahead of schedule during the early morning hours Tuesday morning.

The closures allowed crews to remove falsework, the temporary wooden structures used to support the Mid-Coast Trolley bridge during construction, from the recently constructed overcrossing at Voigt Drive and to install falsework south of Nobel Drive for the second overcrossing. Both overcrossings span I-5, which will allow the future Mid-Coast Trolley to cross the freeway at two different points along its route.

Lane closures began on June 9 and were completed ahead of schedule. Now that falsework has been installed, crews can begin constructing the Trolley overcrossing south of Nobel Drive. Construction of the overcrossing is expected to continue through April 2020 and will require future additional freeway closures.

The Mid-Coast Trolley Project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Old Town Transit Center to the University community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and University Towne Centre. Nine new stations will be constructed. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in late 2021.
