SANDAG Executive Director Visits Mid-Coast Trolley Overnight Construction

August 16, 2019-- On Thursday night, SANDAG Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata observed an overnight concrete pour for the Mid-Coast Trolley Project. The pour, which formed the deck for the elevated Trolley bridge, took place at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive, a significant intersection between the future Trolley stations at Executive Drive and UTC Terminus.

“We are in the heart of the University community,” Ikhrata said, “When this project is complete, residents, commuters, employers, students, and visitors will be able to travel to and from the University area and all the way down to the U.S Mexico border with ease.”

The University community, adjacent to the growing UC San Diego campus, is an employment hub and one of the most densely populated areas in the San Diego region. The Mid-Coast Trolley Blue Line will provide efficient public transit options, alleviating some of the traffic congestion for residents and commuters in the area.

Mid-Coast Trolley construction has been hard to miss in the University community. Over the past year, 142, 90-ton girders were installed to form the over one-mile-long Trolley bridge that runs along Genesee Avenue, from Campus Pointe Drive to Nobel Drive.

Work is currently underway to complete deck pours along Genesee Avenue in time for the construction moratorium that will go into effect near Thanksgiving and continue through New Year’s Day. Last night’s pour required approximately 400 cubic feet of concrete.

Ikhrata said it is important to visit construction sites to  see work progress and commented on how the Mid-Coast Trolley project fits into larger goals SANDAG envisions for the San Diego region by serving as an example of a Complete Corridor, one of the 5 Big Moves proposed in the SANDAG regional plan.

“We will transform the region in ways not imagined until now, connecting communities through innovative, equitable means of travel,” said Ikhrata. “Residents will have the freedom of choice in their travel. By providing that freedom, we ultimately provide improved access to the resources fundamental to enhancing quality of life throughout the San Diego region.”

The Mid-Coast Trolley Project will extend Blue Line Trolley service from Old Town north to the University community, serving major activity centers such as Mission Bay Park, the VA Medical Center, UC San Diego, and University Towne Centre. Nine new stations are part of the project and are under construction.  Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in late 2021.
