Rapid 640

Project Overview

This new Rapid 640 route is being planned in response to public feedback asking for faster transit service to Central San Diego from the U.S.-Mexico border. It will complement the Blue Line Trolley service, taking riders from the San Ysidro Transit Center to Downtown San Diego with limited stops along I-5.

Rapid 640 is one of many transit solutions planned to help reduce crowding during commute times, offering a fast, reliable alternative to driving. It will provide access to jobs, education, medical services, recreation, and more.

Schedule

Since early 2025, SANDAG has been studying potential route alignments, transit locations, and other key details while continuing to collect public feedback to inform this process. Watch the learning session (en español) about this project from April 2, 2025. This work will continue through 2027.

Next steps include environmental clearance, project design, and construction, contingent on available funding.

Budget

In October 2023, the SANDAG Board of Directors approved $26.6 million for the planning and design of six new Rapid routes. The current planning effort for Rapid 640 is funded with FTA formula funds, and the total expected cost is approximately $4 million.
