This new bus route is being planned in response to public feedback asking for faster transit service to Central San Diego from the U.S.-Mexico border. It will complement the Blue Line Trolley service, taking riders from the San Ysidro Transit Center to Downtown San Diego with limited stops along I-5.
Rapid 640 is one of many transit solutions planned to help reduce crowding during commute times, offering a fast, reliable alternative to driving. It will provide access to jobs, education, medical services, recreation, and more.
We will continue to gather input from people who make trips between these areas to ensure this route will help users access their most vital destinations. Subscribe to get email updates about this project and how you can help shape it.
When Will This Bus Be Ready to Ride?
From early 2025 to mid-2026, we will study where the route could go, its potential stops, and many other details. Pending funding for planning, design, and construction, it could be open for riders as soon as 2029.
