The 2.3-mile Pershing Bikeway improves north-south connectivity and enhances access to Balboa Park for people who bike, walk, or roll between North Park and Downtown San Diego. Features include separated two-way bike lanes, buffers from vehicle traffic, a neighborhood traffic circle, and a separated walking path. The bikeway creates more comfortable and convenient biking and walking conditions for people of all ages and abilities. The project also added substantial underground improvements including two underground storm drain systems that will eliminate or greatly reduce flooding in the area. The Pershing Bikeway construction process also contributed to the region's economy by employing several small, disadvantaged businesses.
Community Connections
The Pershing Bikeway is an important connection between North Park and Downtown San Diego. It begins in North Park at the intersection of Utah and Landis streets and runs south along Utah Street, where it connects with Pershing Drive. From there, the route travels through Balboa Park via Pershing Drive and connects to C Street in Downtown San Diego. The 2.3-mile path helps bike riders and walkers travel to Balboa Park, San Diego City College, Morley Field Golf Course, Downtown San Diego, and Golden Hill Park.

The Pershing Bikeway is an important part of the Regional Active Transportation Early Action Program which was adopted by the SANDAG Board of Directors in September 2013. The project is also consistent with the City of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan, Vision Zero Plan, and Bicycle Master Plan.
Project Status and Funding
The Pershing Bikeway project was funded by TransNet, the region’s voter-approved half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements administered by SANDAG. Construction on the Pershing Bikeway began in early 2022 and the project was opened to the public on July 27, 2024.
