Airport Travel Survey

In coordination with other local agencies, SANDAG is advancing the Airport Transit Connection, a direct link between San Diego International Airport and our regional transit system. Our goal is to make getting to and from the airport more convenient and accessible throughout the region. The Airport Transit Connection is part of the SANDAG Regional Plan which aims to enhance our region’s quality of life by making sure our transportation system is faster, fairer, and cleaner.

Survey Purpose and Timing

SANDAG is conducting an Airport Travel Survey to gather input from residents, visitors, and airport employees on their travel to and from the airport. Understanding how people travel to the airport and their travel preferences will inform Airport Transit Connection project planning and other regional transportation initiatives. Responses will provide valuable insights into post-pandemic travel preferences and will help us refine our plans.

The Airport Travel Survey will occur between late September and mid-November 2024. Our survey ambassadors will be conducting in-person surveys at the San Diego International Airport and some airport parking lots, on board airport shuttles, and on MTS Bus Route 992.

Online, self-administered surveys will also be available during this period. Watch for online survey signage within both airport terminals to participate. Participation is essential for shaping the future of airport transit connectivity in the San Diego region.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Airport Transit Connection aims to make airport access easier and more convenient by better connecting the airport with our regional transit system. This project will support state climate goals. By offering more transit options to the airport, we can reduce traffic to and from the airport. This will improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making San Diego a cleaner and greener place to live and visit. This project is also a part of the SANDAG Regional Plan, which focuses on enhancing the quality of life in our region through improved transportation options.

The survey will collect data on how people travel to and from the airport. This information will help SANDAG understand post-pandemic travel behaviors and preferences. This information will help our project team decide which airport transit connection options are best suited for the San Diego region. The San Diego International Airport will also use this information to help improve transportation access and overall customer experience.

We are seeking input from residents, visitors, and airport employees who are traveling to and from the San Diego International Airport between late September and mid-November 2024.

You may connect with a SANDAG surveyor at the San Diego International Airport. To help ensure that we are collecting information from current airport travelers and employees, this survey will be conducted in person. Our team will be at the airport, on board airport shuttles, and on MTS Route 992 throughout October. Some online, self-administered survey options will also be available from mid-October to mid-November. Look for our friendly surveyors in blue polos and surveyor vests.

ETC Institute has been hired by SANDAG to perform surveying activities. Surveyors will be identifiable by their blue vests and badges. Survey supervisors will wear white polo shirts with "Survey Team Supervisor" on the sleeve. All surveyors will carry a survey authorization letter from the San Diego International Airport. Surveyors can be found on airport shuttles and MTS Bus Route 992, in airport parking lots, before security on airport grounds, and at various gates within both airport terminals. Please do not provide personal information to anyone who is not an authorized surveyor.

The firm that is responsible for managing this survey will share this information with SANDAG and the minimum necessary information with the San Diego International Airport, San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, North County Transit District, Federal Transit Administration, and a gift card vendor to issue incentives and raffle awards when applicable. Personally Identifiable Information (PII) will not be shared publicly. Please read the privacy policy below to understand how SANDAG will safeguard the information you entrust us with. Incentives and raffle awards are only available to survey respondents.

You can reach out to the project team via email at atc@sandag.org or phone at 619.929.0724 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) for any questions or concerns regarding the Airport Transit Connection project or the survey. For media inquiries, please email pio@sandag.org.
