Our streets should be safe for everyone. That’s why the SANDAG Board of Directors adopted a Regional Vision Zero Resolution to outline steps toward eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility options for all. Vision Zero rejects the idea that traffic crashes are inevitable and instead views them as preventable incidents.
Nearly three people are killed or seriously injured on our region’s roads every day. Between 2018 and 2022, 4,433 lives were lost or permanently changed due to crashes on local roads.
SANDAG developed a Vision Zero Action Plan to address this complex problem. Finalized in 2024, the data-driven action plan is a tool for decision-makers across local, state, federal, and tribal governments. The plan and its accompanying technical appendices illustrate where crashes occur, who is bearing the greatest burden, and what strategies can be implemented to support the goal of zero traffic deaths.
The action plan provides two key resources (available on the Traffic Safety Dashboard on SANDAG’s Open Data Portal):
- The Safety Focus Network identifies the 6% of the regional transportation network that accounts for 54% of fatal or serious injury crashes.
- The Systemic Safety Network identifies opportunities for safety improvements at locations with similar characteristics to roads on the Safety Focus Network.
Additionally, the plan recommends several proven roadway safety strategies:
- Context-responsive designs can better accommodate all road users, account for human mistakes, reduce impact forces, and provide additional reaction time and visibility.
- Safer speeds protect everyone traveling on our roads.
- Responsible travel behavior and systemic changes will enable safer operation of vehicles and devices.
