Sustainability Intern

Overview of our Energy and Climate Change Program

The Energy and Climate Change program supports local efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with statewide goals to prepare for the impacts of climate change. Projects include energy engineering services and climate action planning for local jurisdictions, clean transportation, and climate adaptation.


Intern Responsibilities

With the guidance and mentoring of senior staff, this position will provide a “hands-on” learning experience in the regional planning profession. Examples of intern responsibilities include:

  • Contribute as a team member to various energy efficiency, climate change, and clean transportation research projects and planning studies; participate in meetings and liaise with project partners; assist with coordinating activities.
  • Provide support for the Roadmap program; participate in the coordination of project outreach and implementation; support the research and development of program materials and the facilitation of member agency participation.
  • Assist with providing staff support for Working Group; record and summarize minutes and actions for distribution; assist with specific follow-up requests that arise from meetings.
  • Collect and compile information required for meeting agendas, committee reports, and presentations; assist with drafting these types of documents.
  • Respond to requests for information from the public or other interested parties.


Qualifications

  • Graduate or final year undergraduate level coursework in public policy, urban/regional planning, or a related field.
    Knowledge of current issues and trends related to energy efficiency, climate change mitigation and adaptation, clean transportation, California energy policy, or regional planning.
  • Ability to independently complete assignments that involve researching, analyzing, and synthesizing information into written summaries, reports, or recommendations.
  • Proficient computer skills with MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Internet research.
  • Ability to communicate with various audiences using exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask and work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks typical of an entry-level planning position.


Hours, Pay, and Perks

Undergraduate-level interns will be paid $15 per hour; interns with a bachelor’s degree or higher will be paid $18 per hour. Interns also receive pro-rated holiday pay, paid sick leave, and a regional transit pass. This internship is offered as a one-year position, working approximately 20 to 25 hours per week. The work is primarily performed during normal business hours and may involve evening and weekends; a specific schedule will be worked out between the intern and manager. Support for the Energy Working Group is needed every fourth Thursday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
