SANDAG Announces $60K in Grant Funding to Encourage People to GO by BIKE

November 21, 2019 -- Mini-Grant applications accepted through January 3, 2020

Do you have an innovative idea to encourage the San Diego region to GO by BIKE?

The SANDAG iCommute program is offering $3,000 mini-grants for programs or projects that promote biking through outreach and education. Projects will help the San Diego region gear up for the 30th Annual SANDAG Bike to Work Day on May 14, 2020. A total of up to $60,000 is up for grabs.

Eligible applicants include local government agencies; community based and nonprofit organizations; business improvement districts, main street associations, and chambers of commerce; and colleges and universities. Public and private (K-12) schools and San Diego County school districts also are eligible if they partner with a community based or non-profit organization.

To qualify for a SANDAG GO by BIKE mini-grant, activities must be free, open to the public, and focused on bike education, safety, and promoting biking as an everyday transportation option.

Examples of past recipients’ activities include:

  • Community rides and guided tours along existing bike paths/infrastructure or historic sites
  • Bike ride scavenger hunts
  • Bike maintenance, skill building, bike commuting, or safety education classes
  • Events which temporarily close streets to vehicle traffic and open them for communities to walk or bike
  • “Bike-In” movies (instead of Drive-In)
  • “Bike to Business” promotions to support local businesses
  • Mini-scale “Bike to Work Day” or “Bike to Campus/School” events
  • Campaigns, events, fairs, or contests that promote biking

New to the SANDAG GO by BIKE mini-grants this year, the purchase of bike lockers or permanent bike racks will be eligible for funding if it is part of a wider bike education effort. This will allow organizations to encourage biking and provide a safe place for people to secure their bikes.

Applications will be accepted now through January 3, 2020, at 5 p.m. Successful applications will be announced by January 31, 2020, and funded activities must take place between March 14 and June 14, 2020.

Complete details on eligibility, evaluation and selection criteria, timelines, and application procedures are available on the SANDAG iCommute Bike Month web page.

SANDAG GO by BIKE mini-grants are made possible with funding from the Federal Highway Administration. Mini-grants support the ongoing effort to encourage people to bike, maintain an active lifestyle, and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With 1,644 miles of bikeways in the region, there are plenty of places to GO by BIKE.
